Raphael

Acrylic painting on canvas, measuring 48 x 48 inches

A pop art version of the biblical archangel Raphael, "God has healed". Raphael is an archangel first mentioned in the Book of Tobit and in 1 Enoch, both estimated to date from between the 3rd and 2nd century BCE.

One of the twenty figures of "ignudi" (nude in Italian) depicted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel between 1508 and 1512 is the source of this captivating face interpreted by the artist Jean Pierre Rousselet. The figure bears garlands of oak leaves and acorns.
